Court Reveals Dr. Obwaka’s Final Hours with Beatrice Wangari as Death Mystery Deepens

Fresh details have emerged in the mysterious death of veteran gynecologist Dr. Robert Job Obwaka, with investigators now pursuing a suspected poisoning case following revelations about his final hours.
Court documents filed at the Kibera High Court indicate that Dr. Obwaka, 79, spent his last moments at the home of Beatrice Wangari, described in proceedings as a close companion with whom he had a long-standing relationship. The two reportedly shared a meal and later became intimate before the doctor’s condition suddenly deteriorated.
According to an affidavit by homicide investigator Sergeant Rhoda Nzioka, Dr. Obwaka drove himself from Nairobi to Kitenge on Friday afternoon, parking at OBC Mall before being picked up by Wangari and driven to her residence in Milimani.
While at the house, Wangari is said to have prepared a meal for the doctor. He later went to rest in the bedroom, where she joined him. Shortly afterward, he developed complications and became unresponsive.
Wangari raised the alarm and sought help from a neighbor, who assisted in calling emergency services. Paramedics arrived to find the doctor with a weak pulse and low oxygen levels. Despite efforts to resuscitate him and rush him to Nairobi Hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident was reported later that night at Kilimani Police Station, and Wangari was subsequently arrested at the hospital.
Investigators told the court they are exploring the possibility of poisoning after recovering several items from the residence, including used plates, a drinking glass, medication, and partially consumed alcohol bottles. The items have since been submitted for toxicological analysis at the government chemist.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) sought to detain Wangari for 14 days to allow completion of investigations, citing the complexity of the case and public interest surrounding the doctor’s death. They also noted that a post-mortem examination, expected to provide further clarity on the cause of death, is still pending.
Wangari’s lawyer opposed the extended detention, arguing that the relationship between the two was neither secret nor unlawful and was known to the doctor’s family. He maintained that Wangari had fully cooperated with investigators and was not a flight risk.
However, the court granted investigators 10 working days to continue holding her as inquiries proceed.
Dr. Obwaka’s death has drawn widespread attention, coming barely a month after a separate incident that had already placed him in the public spotlight. Authorities say investigations remain ongoing as they await forensic results that could determine the exact cause of death.
