REVEALED: CS Justin Muturi’s Democratic Party Set to Exit Kenya Kwanza, Eyes Alliance with Rigathi Gachagua

The Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) has announced its decision to sever ties with President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza coalition, citing the government’s failure to fulfill key campaign promises. As the party prepares to formally exit the ruling alliance, it has expressed interest in forging a new political partnership with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Reasons for Leaving Kenya Kwanza

The DP, a party founded in 1991 by former President Mwai Kibaki and veteran politician John Keen, issued a 30-day notice of its intent to withdraw from Kenya Kwanza. This move highlights growing dissatisfaction with President Ruto’s administration, particularly over unfulfilled campaign pledges in crucial sectors such as education and healthcare.

The party’s departure also coincides with increasing tensions within Kenya Kwanza. Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi, who led DP into the coalition before resigning as its leader to join the government, has recently found himself at odds with President Ruto. Their disagreement stems from concerns over abductions allegedly carried out by state security agencies, further exposing cracks within the ruling alliance.

Gachagua’s Role in DP’s Next Move

As DP distances itself from Kenya Kwanza, it has signaled a willingness to align with Rigathi Gachagua, who has been making moves to establish his own political party. Gachagua, who initially planned to unveil his new party on New Year’s Day before postponing the announcement to May, has described the yet-to-be-launched entity as a “brand new” outfit. However, some of his allies claim it may be a rebranded version of an existing party rather than a fresh formation.

By positioning itself alongside Gachagua, DP may be looking to strengthen its influence ahead of the next general election. The former Deputy President has been vocal about his political ambitions, and this new alliance could challenge the dominance of Kenya Kwanza in upcoming elections.

The Future of Kenya Kwanza

The DP’s withdrawal underscores a growing sense of unease within Kenya Kwanza, which was formed as a broad coalition of various political parties ahead of the 2022 elections. The alliance includes President Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Ford Kenya, the now-defunct Amani National Congress, Maendeleo Chap Chap, the Economic Freedom Party, Chama Cha Kazi, The Service Party, Tujibebe Wakenya, and others.

With DP’s exit and Gachagua’s emerging political strategy, Kenya Kwanza faces the challenge of maintaining unity amid shifting alliances. The coming months will determine whether these changes will weaken the ruling coalition or pave the way for new political formations as the country gears up for the next election cycle.
