Late Chebukati’s Cause of Death Revealed

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman, Wafula Chebukati, will be laid to rest on March 8, 2025, at his home in Sabata village, near Kitale in Trans Nzoia County.

The family, through spokesperson Eric Wafula Nyongesa, confirmed the burial arrangements and provided details about Chebukati’s illness and final days.

According to Nyongesa, Chebukati was diagnosed with brain cancer and underwent two surgeries as part of his treatment. He initially traveled to Germany, where doctors performed a procedure to remove a brain tumor. However, in April 2024, medical tests revealed that the tumor had returned, requiring a second surgery in Germany.

After returning to Kenya, his condition worsened, leading to hospitalization in December 2024. He was later discharged but was re-admitted on February 12, 2025. A week later, on February 20, he suffered a cardiac arrest while in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a Nairobi hospital.

Nyongesa dismissed circulating social media rumors claiming that Chebukati had been declared “clinically dead” before his passing. “At no time was the immediate family informed that he was clinically dead,” he clarified.

The family has announced that a post-mortem examination will be conducted before the scheduled burial.
